The Hike | Dave Roberts

Support Dave and his efforts at National Links Trust’s ‘The Hike at East Potomac’ on Monday, June 10th

I didn’t grow up playing golf. I didn't pick up a club until I was in high school, and then promptly put them away for the better part of a decade. Before losing a friend to cancer a few years ago, I didn’t really think much about how the game had taken on new meaning and importance as a way to stay connected with friends. But like so many others, during the peaks of COVID, golf – and specifically the Blue Course at East Potomac – became my escape. There was just something about sitting in the parking lot with coffee in hand waiting for the sun to come up so I could get out and clear my mind.

While I may not have grown up with the game, I’ve made a point to expose my kids to it and there is no better place to do so than East Potomac. I started bringing my son to the driving range there as soon as he could hold a club. Now I drop him off at summer camp, where he loves the freedom that comes with walking the White Course, deep in a match against the big kids. Every Father’s Day my kids ask to go golfing on the Red Course, which is as much about cartwheels in the fairway and drinks on the patio as it is about any swing or putt.

I'm thrilled to participate in The Hike at East Potomac Golf Links because this is a special place full of interesting people. East Potomac was once the epitome of what municipal golf could be. It deserves caretakers like the National Links Trust who are committed to ensuring that each of D.C.’s courses remain accessible, affordable, and engaging for everyone.
